In general, Santa Claus in our mind is a kindly old man with red clothes and white beard. He always comes to our house at Christmas Eve with his sled driving by 12 reindeer, and he distributes presents for children. However, he doesn't come in our house through the door, but the chimney.

Actually, the story of Santa Claus comes from European folk legend. Along with the world changing, writers and artists described Father Christmas as the image we are familiar with. Meanwhile, different countries has different understanding about Santa Claus. The phrase "Santa Claus" comes from Dutch "Sinterklaas".

In Italy, "La Befana" is the name of Santa Claus. In the late 11th century, religious soldiers from Italian brought remains of Saint Nicholas, and built a church in the port city, Bari, to honor him. Soon Christians around the world came to pilgrimage the Saint. The pilgrims brought Saint Nicholas story back to their own country, so relevant stories of Santa Claus in different countries have different features. Germany, France and the Netherlands made December 6 as religious anniversary, giving gifts to the children and the poor people.

In France, the image of Père Noel is similar with Santa Claus, with red clothes and white beard, whose appearance once made Coca-Cola get inspiration to make the advertise image that we all know today.

In UK, they call Santa Claus as "Father Christmas", whose image is more solemn and thinner than other Santa Claus.

In Germany, Santa Claus has one assistant named Knecht Ruprech, with a big bag full of gifts on shoulder and a stick in hand.  Good children can receive his gift, while naughty children will receive a few sticks.

In Iceland, there is not only one Santa Claus. Nine Santa Claus are there. Each has his distinct character, one is naughty or lively, while other one is kindly and gentle.

Switzerland's Santa is called "Christ Child" or "Christkind".

China's Santa image has close relationship with commercial activity. After reform and  opening-up in the 1980s, Santa was introduced to China as promotion means by Coca-Cola.
